Global cooperation for the digitalization of wind energy:
visual design and communication.

CLIENT: National Renewable Energy Laboratory - IEA Wind Task 43. Boulder, Colorado

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is the major intergovernmental organization dedicated to the areas of energy supply and energy demand. IEA Wind is the sub-organization dedicated to the development of wind energy across the world. IEA Wind conducts various projects, called Tasks, each representing a theme relevant to industry, governments, academia, and financial stakeholders.

The aim of IEA Wind Task 43 is to leverage digitalization to identify opportunities to reduce lifecycle costs, enhance performance of assets, and effectively integrate wind energy into evolving energy grids and markets.

THE NEED

Task 43 was looking for a recognizable presence and visual consistency in its presentation. One that would reinforce the Task’s position and work done, in order to create awareness in the international community.

The design identity needed to capture the essence of Task 43 and effectively communicate its core values and mission. The design needed to convey their commitment to global cooperation, cutting-edge research, and the advancement of wind energy digitalization technologies, while also resonating with a diverse audience that included researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and the general public.

THE WORK

Together we conducted extensive research into the wind energy industry’s historic communication, exploring the visual language commonly associated with the field as well as the hidden opportunities.

Based on our research findings, we developed several design concepts that embodied the essence of Task 43. These concepts explored various visual elements, including symbols of wind power, the wind turbine rotor, collaboration, digitalization, and technological innovation. Each concept was carefully crafted to evoke a sense of progress, reliability, and sustainability.

The creation of an authentic Design Identity has had a significant impact on the IEA Wind Task 43 communication efforts and perception. It has provided the team with a visually consistent set of graphic assets, that help reinforce the position as a leader in wind energy international cooperation research.

The Design Identity has successfully engaged its diverse audience, attracting new collaborators, funding opportunities, and elevating its global influence.
